What Is Candle Making
Basically it is the creative process of making candles with the use of basic tools, materials and supplies. It is considered as an art form and a craft. You can make different types of candles with different styles and forms, using various products. It can also be a fun hobby for you and your love ones. It can be a business product and an amazing present. Candle making is an exciting and entertaining activity that everyone will surely love.
There are different kinds of candles that you can make and choose from. Typical round candles that stand by themselves are called pillar candles; they may have one or two wicks in them. Candles that are usually used during dinner with large bases and narrow towards the top are called taper candles. Those that are gel like in texture, with transparent and rubbery features are called gel candles. Candles that are specially made to float on water are called floating candles. The ones that are used to warm food or used as holder in a tea light are called tea candles. Candles that can be safely burned in small heat resistant containers are called votive candles. Those that are commonly made as decorations and maybe three dimensional and can be molded and sculpted by hand are called specialty candles. There are many more other types of candles. These are just a few examples that you can choose to make.
The materials that are needed during candle making are wax, additives, boiler and pan, dipping pan, wicks and a mold. The wax is the most important ingredient in candle making, without it you have no candle. Additives are added to make a candle more flexible, it can make candles harder, softer, clearer or cloudier. Candle molds gives shape to candles, there are many types of molds that you can choose from, like rigid latex, rubber, tin and improvised molds. The wick determines whether the candle is effective or not. If the proper wick is chosen candles will burn successfully. Other things can also be added to the candles such as dyes, fragrance and glitters to make them more attractive and pleasant. Information on making candles and the tools and designs used in the process are constantly changing for a better candle making experience.
What is candle making without its proper procedure? Off course it will be incomplete. Actually the candle making process is quite easy. First thing to do is to prepare the materials you will use. Once this is done, melt the wax in a double boiler. Wax should not be heated directly, place it over boiling water instead. Place the wick on the molder; it can be threaded through a hole in the bottom of the mold. Then plug the hole with a piece of wax paper. When the molder and wick are ready and the wax has already melted, you will need a pour pot to transfer the wax into the molds. Pour it carefully and slowly then let it dry for a day. Once dry you can remove the candle from the mold and put designs or sculpt it as desired.
During candle making it is important to take precautionary measures to ensure safety. Wax should be melted over boiling water in a double boiler. It should not be heated directly. Direct heat can cause it to burst into flames or explode. Use an accurate thermometer to check temperature of wax to be poured. When cooling poured wax in molds don’t leave it in places that children can reach to prevent burns and scalding. If the wax catches on fire never pour water on it, it will only cause the fire to spread. Cover it instead with a lid or use a fire extinguisher.
Making candles is extremely fun and rewarding for candle making enthusiasts. Are you ready to start your great candle making adventures?
